Northern Virginia is my painted celebration of the dynamic, layered character of the Washington, D.C. suburbs—an environment where history, tradition, and modern life coexist in a vibrant patchwork. Using acrylic on canvas enhanced with digital signage, I map Fairfax, Prince William, and portions of Loudoun and Stafford Counties as a living landscape—one defined not only by geography, but by the spirit of the communities that occupy it.
This work treats the region as both place and pattern. Landmarks, neighborhoods, rivers, and roadways are rendered with the warmth of folk-art storytelling, arranged into a tapestry of color and motion. Each emblem, structure, and ribbon of highway symbolizes the ways in which Northern Virginia brings together people from every direction—military, federal, rural, urban, historic, and newly built—forming an ever-shifting mosaic of American life.
The playful density of imagery mirrors the energy of the area itself: bustling, layered, and constantly evolving. The Potomac River winds through as a grounding presence, reminding viewers that even in one of the most fast-paced regions in the country, nature remains central to its identity.
